Cannot play audio CDs on a Textel CD-ROM due to incorrect version of software.
Cause:
The Textel CD-ROM drive is using a version of software older then 1.10.
Solution:
Upgrade to a more recent version of software, or disable the protected-mode drivers in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.
NOTE: It is recommended that you upgrade to a more recent version of the software.
To play audio CDs on a Textel CD-ROM, do one of the following:
1) Contact the manufacturer of the CD-ROM drive and obtain the most current version of the software.
2) Disable the protected-mode drivers:
NOTE: The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
a) Edit the file Autoexec.bat in Notepad:
1] Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2] Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'. (A submenu appears.)
3] Select 'Notepad'. (The 'Untitled - Notepad' window appears.)
4] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
5] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
6] Click 'Open'. (The 'Autoexec.bat - Notepad' window appears.)
7] Create a backup copy of the file Autoexec.bat:
a] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
c] Click 'Save'. (The 'Autoexec.bak - Notepad' window appears.)
8] Locate the line with the filename Mscdex.exe.
9] If the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -' precedes the contents of the line:
a] Select the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -'. (The phrase is highlighted.)
NOTE: Window 95 ignores any step that begins with 'rem' or ';'.
b] Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'. (The phrase disappears.)
10] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
11] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
AUTOEXEC.BAT
12] Click 'Save'.
13] If a confirmation dialog box appears, click 'Yes'.
b) Open the file Config.dos in Notepad:
NOTE: If the computer does not have Config.dos, contact a qualified computer technician or next-level support.
1] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
2] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.DOS
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
3] Click 'Open'. (The 'Config.dos - Notepad' window appears.)
4] Locate the line(s) with the reference /<CD-ROM>:MSCD000.
(where <CD-ROM> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive).
5] Write down the contents of that line for reference.
6] Open the file Config.sys in Notepad:
a] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
b] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.SYS
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
c] Click 'Open'. (The 'Config.sys - Notepad' window appears.)
7] Create a backup copy of Config.sys:
a] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
c] Click 'Save'. (The 'Config.bak - Notepad' window appears.)
8] Locate the line(s) that you copied down from the file Config.dos.
9] If the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -' precedes the contents of the line:
a] Select the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -'. (The phrase is highlighted.)
b] Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'. (The phrase is deleted.)
NOTE: If there are two lines containing /<CD-ROM>:MSCD000 (where <CD-ROM> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive), make sure the line that matches the one found in Config.dos is NOT remarked out and the other line IS remarked out.
10] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
11] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.SYS.
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
12] Click 'Save'.
13] If a confirmation dialog box appears, click 'Yes'.
14] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit' to close Notepad.
c) Restart the computer:
1] Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2] Select 'Shut Down...'. (The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box appears.)
3] Select the 'Restart the computer' radio button and click 'Yes'. (Windows 95 restarts using real mode drivers.)
